“Keynote Talk: Causal Inference in the Real World: A Matter of Life and Death”

Causal inference provides a framework for drawing cause-and-effect conclusions from observational data—an increasingly important challenge in medicine and public health. In this keynote lecture, Dr. Nandita Mitra, Professor of Biostatistics at the Perelman School of Medicine and Professor of Statistics and Data Science at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where she also co-directs the Penn Center for Causal Inference, will introduce the central ideas of causal inference through real-world examples. She will share insights from her experience as an expert witness in a death-penalty case, where causal thinking was used to evaluate claims of discrimination, and then discuss how similar approaches can strengthen evidence in dermatology and dermatologic therapeutics.
