Biography

Iain Noel Encarnacion is a rising 4th year medical student at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and a current 2024-2025 Research Fellow in Skin of Color Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania under the mentorship of Dr. Susan C. Taylor and Dr. Temitayo Ogunleye. He completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Virginia and received a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences at EVMS.

His areas of interests span medical dermatology, oncodermatology, skin of color, and LGBTQ health. He is particularly passionate about health advocacy and policy and is committed to advancing the rights and visibility of underrepresented minorities. He is a Co-Chair for a state-wide Dermatology Advocacy conference in Virginia, which trains attendees on engaging in effective advocacy for patients and healthcare professionals. In addition, he serves on the national Asian and Pacific American Medical Student Association advocacy committee which centers the health needs of Asian Americans. He is also a co-author of a chapter on the considerations for sexual and gender diverse populations in the 3rd edition of Taylor & Kelly’s Skin of Color textbook.

While at Penn Dermatology, he is excited to research and further develop his understanding of the clinical needs of communities of color and assist in growing Penn’s multidisciplinary gender affirming care clinic. He looks forward to carrying the lessons learned at Penn into his future training and career.
