Penn Academy for Skin Health (PASH) Program provides an engaging research experience for high school students (10th-12th grade) in Philadelphia.

The four-weekend program will give students interested in science and dermatology hands-on experience in research and medicine. Participants engage with scientists and clinicians in the dermatology field to learn about laboratory techniques, perform experiments using state-of-the-art equipment, discover dermatologic diseases, and network with Penn faculty. Students may also be eligible for a paid summer internship with Penn Dermatology, sponsored by the Office of Outreach, Education, and Research (OER). Students can also choose to participate in our ECuRE programming.

PASH is held at the Department of Dermatology of the University of Pennsylvania.

The application period for Spring 2024 PASH is closed.

Questions may be submitted via email (pash-dermatology@pennmedicine.upenn.edu).

Program Details

Founded in 2017, PASH is Penn SBDRC’s outreach program, which has connected with the local Philly community, exposing its 8th cohort of students to the world of dermatologic research in 2024. Sponsored by Penn Medicine Dermatology, over 40 volunteers from the Department of Dermatology come together to facilitate this incredible program. Despite the onset of Covid-19, PASH persisted, hosting our first virtual sessions in 2021. In 2022, we had the honor of invited our PASH/OER alumni to present at the SBDRC Scientific Symposium.

The program will run 4 consecutive Saturdays in March from 9 am to 1 pm each day.

Students will engage with material divided into 4 themes by week. The 2024 syllabus can be found here.

"Every Friday night I would look forward to my Saturday mornings going to PASH, which filled me with excitement and made me feel one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a doctor. Throughout these four weeks, I have learned so much in biology and about skin health... When I put on my lab coat and step foot into the lab, I feel like I'm stepping into my future."
