Biography
Tatiana Barrera attended the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine (Class of 2023) with a designated emphasis in Medical Spanish. Tatiana grew up in a Salvadoran immigrant household in Los Angeles, CA where she experienced health barriers to obtaining dermatologic care. The first in her family to graduate high school, she attended Pepperdine University as a pre-medical student, graduating Cum Laude with a BA in Religion. Shortly after, Tatiana worked for a disability nonprofit, helping to bring health resources to marginalized communities by translating and voicing a Spanish radio program. As a medical student, Tatiana continued to grow in her passion for mitigating health disparities through research and clinical care.
In 2022, she joined Penn Dermatology as a Research Fellow in Skin of Color Dermatology and completed the Clinical Research Certificate Program at Penn. Her research focused on the epidemiology of atopic dermatitis, improving health outcomes for skin of color populations, and clinical informatics. In addition, Tatiana served with Penn Dermatology at Puentes de Salud, a free clinic that serves Philadelphia’s Latinx immigrant community, and as a student member of the Penn Dermatology Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Tatiana aspires to be an academic dermatologist who will provide equitable care, pursue innovative research, and advocate for diversity and inclusion in vulnerable patient communities. In her free time, you can find Tatiana training her rescue dog, running at sunset, or cooking a family recipe while singing along to Latinx music.
