Description of Training Program
The Cutaneous Oncology Program was initiated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. Nine full time Penn Dermatology faculty members support the clinical and research programs: Dr. Ellen Kim, Dr. Carmela Vittorio, Dr. Brian Capell, Dr. Emily Chu, Dr. Michael Ming, Dr. Sara Samimi, Dr. Jennifer Villasenor-Park, Dr. Chris Miller. This program represents the initial year of a four year residency within the Department of Dermatology. During this initial year, the trainee works side by side with leaders in the field of Cutaneous Lymphoma and Malignant Melanoma. Expertise is developed in the diagnosis and management of all stages of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, with special emphasis placed on the use of immune response modifiers including photopheresis, cytokines (interferons and interleukins), Toll-like receptor agonists, and retinoids.
The Cutaneous Lymphoma Program is also a major referral center for cutaneous B-cell lymphomas. On the photopheresis service, the resident will also have the unique opportunity to work with patients with cutaneous graft vs. host disease and solid organ transplantation rejection. Participation in the Lymphoma program’s patient-oriented and laboratory based research efforts are encouraged. Clinical trials of novel therapeutic agents are typically ongoing at any given time. The resident also participates in regularly scheduled Pigmented Lesion Group clinics with the resultant opportunity to gain expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and dysplastic nevi of all types. The resident should receive adequate training and be provided with the requisite skills and expertise to pursue an academic career in patient-oriented research in cutaneous oncology upon conclusion of the remaining years of the Dermatology Residency Program. This is a matched program.
