General Dermatology Services
As the oldest dermatology department in the United States, Penn Dermatology’s faculty offer broad expertise in skin, hair and nail diseases. Penn’s dermatologists, dermatologic surgeons and dermatopathologists diagnose, treat and care for patients with common and rare dermatological conditions in the department’s numerous general dermatology and specialty clinics.
Penn Dermatology provides state-of-the-art treatment capabilities for all general dermatologic conditions, which are often unavailable at other private practice dermatology groups or health care facilities in the Philadelphia region, including:
- Cosmetic and skin enhancement services
- Laser treatment
- Mohs micrographic and reconstructive surgery
- Patch testing available in the allergic contact dermatitis clinic
- Phototherapy, including narrowband UVB, PUVA, hand/foot PUVA and excimer laser
Penn Dermatology also offers an urgent care clinic.
Diagnosing Dermatologic Disease at Penn
Penn’s dermatopathologists or skin pathology specialists are considered the best in the United States. At Penn Dermatology, dermatopathologists work directly with Penn doctors and referring physicians and dermatologists to diagnose skin, hair and nail disorders. Many patients come to Penn Dermatology for a second opinion about previous diagnoses.
Penn Dermatology is one of the few dermatology departments in the country with dedicated dermatologic research laboratories and dermatopathologic facilities. Physicians from across the Philadelphia region and around the country routinely send biopsies to Penn Dermatology for accurate and thorough diagnoses of dermatologic conditions.
Pediatric Dermatology
The Section of Pediatric Dermatology based at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) provides expert care for children with common to rare skin conditions. Its faculty members hold joint appointments in the Departments of Pediatrics and Dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Section of Pediatric Dermatology provides educational experiences and training for Penn dermatology residents, medical students, nurse practitioner, as well as CHOP pediatric residents through a variety of outpatient clinics, the inpatient consultative service, journal clubs, and didactic sessions. Research activities currently include both investigator-initiated clinical projects as well as pediatric clinical trials.
